Atrium goes up at The Ark
Carpenter Oak has just completed the erection of an oak frame for the atrium at the new Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice. When completed The Ark hospice, based in Barnet, will be the first children’s hospice building to serve North and Central London and will help over 1,200 babies and children with life threatening or life limiting conditions.
Noah’s Ark currently offers a hospice-at-home service but does not have a physical building. The Ark is due to open in March 2019 and will serve five London boroughs and Hertsmere.
Michael Artemis, whose 12 year old daughter Eli uses the services of Noah’s Ark, explains why the new building is so important to London families: “The need has never been greater to create a safer space for the most vulnerable in our society. Eli and children like her will finally have a space of their own to spread their wings. The joy and sense of freedom our daughter and children like her derive when they experience a purpose build space is incalculable. The building creates a calmness, a sense of connection and quiet energy that inspires and gives one hope for the future for vulnerable children like Eli.”
Carpenter Oak, who built the wooden atrium, are just one of the big construction sector names involved in the Noah’s Ark project, all of which are working at a reduced rate to make this essential service possible. It is a unique collaboration for this sector.
Ru Watkins, CEO of Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, said: “We really appreciate the way the construction sector has taken The Ark to heart. From the start of the project, when Erith Demolition cleared the hospice site saving us over £170,000, our construction partners have helped in so many ways including free-of-charge consultancy, donations of materials and other offers in kind. The charity exists to provide care and support for children and young people from birth who have a life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. The aim is to enable them to live full lives and to achieve their aspirations and also to ensure that families are able to live life as fully as possible while their child is still alive, and go on to face the future with hope after bereavement.
