About Us:

The Royal Gunpowder Mills is an important heritage site in operation for 300+ years with a remarkable true story. From the mid-1850s the site was involved in developing new nitro-based explosives and propellants. The site grew in size but gunpowder became less important. Shortly after World War II it became a Defence Research Establishment. Visitors can learn more about its history on site at the many exhibits. A must is a guided land train tour through 170 acres of parkland and woodland, streams and dry canals. The site has over 20 listed buildings and mysterious structures of the historic explosives factory peeping through the beautiful Alder woodland originally planted for charcoal production. The charity which runs the attraction is committed to conserving and sharing the fascinating 300 year history with future generations by providing exciting and interesting educational programmes and family activities during school holidays.
